Campaign for a new convention centre for Halifax gets a boost

(Halifax, NS) — People involved in attracting, managing and supplying big events to the region have launched a petition supporting the development of a new convention centre. They say the project will bring prosperity to the region and help revitalize downtown Halifax.

The petition has been launched by the Atlantic Canada Chapter of Meeting Professionals International (MPI).  Kim George, President of MPI Atlantic Canada Chapter says, "I encourage everyone in the business community to support this petition for a new Convention Centre. We need to keep our vibrant city on the shopping list of destinations for the global convention market and also provide an incredible venue for local and regional meetings and events. If you are a retailer, a cab driver, a restaurateur-you are all also part of this industry.  Make your voice heard."

Over the past 10 years, Trade Centre Limited (TCL) has brought more than 8 million people to events at the World Trade and Convention Centre and Halifax Metro Centre. It has generated almost $975 million in direct expenditures, and generated more than $40 million in provincial tax revenues.

Beyond the economic spin-offs, meetings and conventions are an anchor to our communities. They impact the bottom lines of businesses large and small; act as gateways that bring new visitors; generate increased exposure, investment and business development; and provide platforms where people gather to share new ideas.

TCL estimates that in the last three years, Nova Scotia has lost at least 70 conferences because of our current lack of capacity. In real terms, this meant a loss of 56,000 delegates, 115,000 room nights and an estimated $4 million in provincial tax revenues.

That's why we need a new facility. That's why we need it now. That's why this petition is so important.

The petition is being circulated on-line. There has already been a strong early response in favour of the new convention centre. www.MPIAtlanticChapter.org

The petition will be sent to all levels of government following April 15, 2010, which is also National Meetings Industry Day.
