(Halifax, NS) – Precision BioLogic Inc., a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of specialized products used to diagnose blood coagulation disorders, is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as one of this year’s Best Workplaces in Canada. Coming in at number eight in the country, Precision BioLogic also took home top honours in the “Fairness” category and was among the top five in the “Camaraderie” category. The list of top companies, and related stories, appear in a special national report in the April 13, 2010 issue of The Globe and Mail.
The list recognizes Precision BioLogic for redefining job roles: “At Precision BioLogic, job roles have been redefined to allow for maximum productivity and respect within the organization. Relationships that would usually be described as ‘reporting relationships’ are described at PBI as ‘support and accountability relationships,’ and individuals with responsibility for a group of people are referred to as their ‘primary support.’ They do not use the words ‘boss’ or ‘subordinate.’”
“The company’s vision of success incorporates the idea of creating value for customers, shareholders and employees simultaneously,” explains Michael Scott, Chairman and CEO of Precision BioLogic. “In order to avoid a ‘command and control’ approach and encourage active participation throughout the company, our organizational structure is not hierarchical. Instead, a ‘hub and spokes’ approach has been adopted, in which functions are shown in their working relationships with each other. The result is an organizational picture that resembles a molecular structure.”
Precision BioLogic employees appreciate the company’s unique organizational structure – helping seal first place in the Fairness category, which recognizes a company on the basis of equity, impartiality and justice. Precision also ranked as one of the top five for camaraderie.
This is Precision BioLogic’s second appearance on the list. In 2008, it became the first Atlantic Canadian company to be recognized as one of the Best Workplaces in Canada.
The list of “Best Workplaces in Canada” is compiled by Great Place to Work® Institute Canada. The competition process is based on two criteria: two-thirds of the total score comes from a 58-statement survey completed by employees, along with their open-ended comments about their organization; the remaining one-third of the score comes from an in-depth review of the organization’s culture, including an evaluation of HR policies and procedures. This offers a rigorous representation of the organization from an employee perspective, and an overall portrait of the workplace culture. Together, they provide crucial data relative to the five trust-building dimensions of a great place to work®: credibility, respect, fairness, pride, and camaraderie.
This year’s list surveyed close to 41,000 employees from more than 200 organizations.
