Provincial funding announcement establishes Nova Scotia as leader in green concrete

Halifax, N.S., – With its announcement of over $1 million toward green concrete projects, Nova Scotia is poised to become a national leader in sustainable cement and concrete. With awards from the ecoNova Scotia Fund for Clean Air and Climate Change going to the Brookfield Lafarge plant to produce low-carbon cement and to Carbon Sense Solutions for a carbon-negative process to cure precast concrete, these announcements highlight banner projects in Nova Scotia’s rapidly expanding green economy.

As the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the power sector, the cement and concrete industries have long sought cost-effective opportunities to reduce energy use and carbon emissions. In response to this significant and global challenge, Halifax-based clean technology developer Carbon Sense Solutions is nearing the commercialization of its Carbon Sense Concrete Curing process.

Working with partners Air Liquide and the Shaw Group, the Carbon Sense process stands to sequester the emissions equivalent to 6,600 cars through 2020 at a single installation, its demonstration project at the Shaw Brick plant in Lantz. With such tremendous global potential, the process has been featured in The New York Times and Scientific American, and was recognized at Innovacorp’s I-3 competition earlier this year.

Through its unique design and the reduction in steam-curing from production, the Carbon Sense process strengthens the concrete produced, dramatically reduces energy costs for producers, and, most uniquely, sequesters carbon dioxide within the concrete. According to President Robert Niven, “We are thrilled by the potential for a Nova Scotia innovation to reduce carbon emissions and increase profitability for a global industry.”

Carbon Sense will also contribute to the Lafarge project, developing carbon-offset guidelines for Lafarge’s low-carbon cement project, enabling the plant to generate revenues through carbon-credit sales.

“With offsets that meet rigorous, internationally recognized standards, we look forward to working with Lafarge to maximize this project’s commercial potential,” says Niven. “We believe the province’s commitment to sustainable prosperity sends a powerful message to international players and local communities. These projects foster long-term economic development locally and the cutting-edge innovations demanded by global markets.”

Media and investor attention to green cement and concrete has never been stronger. The timing of these projects positions Nova Scotia to compete for international investment in this increasingly attractive field, likely sparking interest in other low-carbon technology investment opportunities throughout Nova Scotia.
