Winter blues

Dartmouth, N.S. – Several years ago, Dr. Cliff Arnall, a specialist in seasonal disorders, developed a formula to calculate the saddest day of the year. Using several factors including dreary weather, holiday debt and broken New Year’s resolutions, he determined that the third Monday of January was the “saddest” day of the year.

For 2012, this “special” date will be January 16th. Adding to this is the fact that February is viewed by many clinicians to be the highest point for people experiencing the winter blues. Symptoms can include weight gain, low energy, feeling down, social withdrawal or sleeping irregularities. Light deprivation due to the colder and shorter days is believed to be the root cause of this condition.

Bright light therapy is currently the first line of treatment recommended by healthcare professionals for fighting the Winter Blues. Bright light therapy systems, like the Day-Light, are designed to counteract the effects of too little light through short daily doses of bright light in the morning.

“Bright light therapy is such a simple, non-invasive option to deal with Winter Blues,” explains Michele Fash, Marketing Manager for Uplift technologies “and its effectiveness was clearly shown in the 2006 CAN-SAD Study.”
