Dartmouth Natal Day and the Leg Injury

It has been a few weeks since I last posted here and the reason has been that I had injured my leg while running at Face to Face.

I have tried some physio and massage therapy but the best results have been hard hands on muscle restoration work by Fred Aylward at FitbyFred in Halifax.

Painful and not fun but very effective.

Sadly, while I was in treatment and not running very much (I had started back too soon after starting the massage and physio treatments and re-injured the thing twice) i kind of reverted back to some of the good old days of enjoying a bit too much gin and tonic and chips.

Not impressed with myself, I stayed away from the blog because i had nothing good to say. One of my colleagues however encouraged me to get back into the blog and share the bad behaviour as surely as I was prepared to share the good behaviour.

Fair enough.

So, I have put on a few pounds and while not pleased by this I haven't fallen far off the proper road and this coming weekend I will be getting ready for the Dartmouth Natal Day Road Race - Six Miles. And I am starting back on a cleansing program next weekend with a plan to be back on target weight loss by this fall.

I have been at the gym regularly and while on vacation last week, I ran several days. Today I had the last of my leg treatments by Fred Aylward and he gave me great preparation advice for the Monday morning race...lots of rest, icing the leg injury and maximize the hydrating (taking in as much water as possible- be very "soggy" on race morning.) Stay away from alcohol until after the race - I said it was great advice, I didn't say I liked it or even that I would follow it completely but...

Want to close with a story that brings a certain amount of happy to my day

Over the past several months I have been having discussions with a long time friend who is in the process of retiring and recently sold control of his company to his son. He had been interested in how I had lost all the weight since I believe he was a little worried about his health. I had been forthcoming and encouraging but during our discussions he wasn't sure he could commit to the program. This afternoon, several months since I last chatted with him about it, I ran into him on Granville St in Halifax - more like he saw me and yelled down the street after me. I noticed immediately that he had lost a substantial amount of weight and looked just fabulous. He told me he was drinking lots of water, doing some light exercise and cutting back on the carbohydrates. He thanked me for pushing him a bit and assured me he was feeling really good. I asked him if he felt friskier...he had no comment...

And with that I am off to the gym for my weekly Pilates class with my trainer Cathy Grad at Burnside Nubody's. Core, flexibility, core, strength and well, core are the focus of this prgram. At the heart of it all is your core.

But before I go I have to say just one thing - Gerry Walsh of Gerald Walsh and Associates has challenged me in the Six Miler in Dartmouth next Monday. He and I have been trash talking for the past couple weeks about this and we have resorted to threatening to physically take each other out during the race - all in good fun of course. What's even more fun though is that we will be in the race and not sitting on the sidelines. Activity is the key. And all of us who are involved with selling and building our businesses know that the more activity there is the better the year end results. Seems that applies to just about everything...

Check in after "the race"
