How did the company start?
Brendan Brothers, Raymond Pretty, and I were completing graduate work at Memorial University developing technology in the robotics industry. A mentor from the university, who had extensive experience in the financial sector, was looking for a novel approach to detect fraud and money laundering. The artificial intelligence (AI) technology that we had specialized in was traditionally used in science and engineering but not the business world. It was an attractive opportunity, especially with the regulations changing in the banking industry after 9-11.

What has been the biggest growth factor?
The software is superior to our competitors’ because of the unconventional and sophisticated AI technologies we use. Our employees have been instrumental in achieving a dominant market position and building the company’s reputation for outstanding customer service and support.

What do you look for in an employee?
Intelligence, passion, determination, teamwork, respect, and a sense of fun.

How do you plan to sustain growth over the next five years?
We’ll continue to hire the best people and retain them by creating an environment where everyone loves coming to work and is recognized for their contribution, and where there are opportunities to grow.

On whom do you rely for advice?
We have a strong board of directors who acts as a sounding board for strategic business decisions. It’s involved across all operational aspects, including product development, sales and marketing, and general corporate administration and governance.

How do you encourage a work/life balance for your employees?
We believe in teamwork and making work fun. Our physical office environment is cool, original, and functional. There are no individual offices or cubicles within the building, and everyone is seated at pods with various teams. People who are working toward a goal or project sit together as a team, and at a moment’s notice this can be reconfigured to meet the needs of the next goal or project. 

This team atmosphere results in a better end product. We also have an employee lounge where people can get away from their pods to relax and play games or music to recharge. And we have social events throughout the year to celebrate milestones and the hard work of the entire team.

We want to continue to nurture an innovative culture where learning and collaboration are always at the forefront.
